The Loft Opens on World Mental Health Day: 5 Easy Ways to Celebrate

I am proud that The Loft is officially opening on World Mental Health Day, 2023. While physical health often takes center stage, today we shine a much-needed light on mental health. It's a day to promote awareness, reduce stigma, and encourage individuals worldwide to prioritize their mental well-being.

Here are 5 easy ways to celebrate World Mental Health Day from the comfort of your home:

1.    Prioritize Self-Care

Make time for activities that rejuvenate your mind and body. Whether it's practicing mindfulness, taking leisurely walks, or enjoying a good book, we cannot function at a high level if our mental fuel tanks are running on empty. Personally, I value quiet time with a good book or cup of coffee. With six kids in the house, waking up early is a way to ensure I have this needed refresher daily.

2.    Practice Gratitude

Cultivate a habit of gratitude. Reflect on the positive aspects of your life, even during difficult times. Gratitude can boost your mental resilience. Making a list of positive personal attributes or things you’re thankful for, even if it’s on a yellow Post-it, can provide a noticeable boost in mood and energy. And if you do use a sticky note, place it on your computer so you can easily remember how awesome you are.

3.    Add Intentional Value

Do something kind or helpful for someone else. It can be as simple as sending a text to a family member or friend. There’s a real psychological benefit to helping others. Anytime I call my mom for no predetermined reason, she feels good and so do I.

4.    Encourage Conversation

Breaking the silence surrounding mental health is crucial. Encourage open and non-judgmental conversations with friends and loved ones. We can easily do this by sharing our own feelings and listening to others. The more we talk about our personal challenges, the more we find others who are facing similar difficulties. There is strength in community.

5.    Discover Local Resources

There are many professional resources available online and in most communities. While The Loft serves the greater Charlotte area (and the rest of North Carolina virtually), the American Counseling Association, the American Psychological Association, and other similar entities can help you find quality providers through their websites. If you're struggling with your mental health, don't hesitate to seek support from a professional. Therapy can provide valuable tools and strategies for managing and improving your mental well-being.

Remember, you are not alone. Millions of people around the world are on their own mental health journeys. Whether you use The Loft or someone else, help and hope is always available. There’s no better time than World Mental Health Day to get started.

Together, let’s celebrate the strength of the human spirit and the resilience that lies within each of us.
